Wireless Not Working After Update / Code 10 Error

Some users have contacted us regarding their Killer Networking adapters not working after a Windows Update. This has affected various adapters, including the 1525, 1535, and 1550. Although we are as yet unsure exactly which update is causing this issue, there seems to be a connection with specific machine manufacturers having pushed an outdated version of the Killer Control Center through Windows Update, along with extremely outdated wireless drivers, which leads to a corrupted device driver.

The following troubleshooting steps should allow you to resolve the issue. 

  1. If your machine has Internet access through Ethernet, or if you are able to move files onto the machine using a USB thumb drive or some other medium, clean installing to the most recent version of the Killer Control Center and device drivers is the best way to resolve this issue. Click here for the guide on clean installing the latest Killer Control Center and device drivers. 
  2. (Code 10) If the clean install does not solve the issue, try manually installing the latest device drivers for your Killer Wireless device. This will hopefully replace the corrupted device driver. Click here for the guide to manually install drivers in Device Manager.
  3. If manually installing the driver does not resolve the issue, or if the network adapter is not present in Device Manager, try clean installing the drivers in Device Manager. This is different than clean installing the Killer Control Center or simply manually installing the drivers in Device Manager. This will hopefully remove the corrupted driver from the Windows Driver Store, allowing you to update to a working driver. Click here for our guide on clean installing drivers in Device Manager.
  4. If none of the above resolves the issue, then the issue may be due to something that is not strictly related to your wireless adapter or drivers, but is causing the adapter to malfunction. Check the support downloads page for your machine or motherboard manufacturer and make sure that you have the latest BIOS available, as well as the latest chipset drivers available. 
  5. If none of the above resolves your issue, you may need to uninstall whatever update caused the issue. Click here for our guide on uninstalling Windows Updates. Please note that this guide only refers to Microsoft Windows Updates specifically. It's possible that the update that caused the issue was not an update to Microsoft Windows, but an update to something else on your system. Keep that in mind if you find yourself manually uninstalling recent updates, which is otherwise covered in the linked guide. 
  6. If you have followed every step in this guide and still have not been able to establish wireless connectivity, try discharging your machine to reset the CMOS. Click here for our guide on discharging your machine. 
  7. If none of the above resolved the issue, then you may need to resort to resetting Windows. This may result in lost files and applications, so restoring a backup is preferable, if you have one available. Click here for Microsoft's information on resetting Windows and click "Reset your PC." Please be sure to read exactly what the reset will entail. Alternatively, you may find that other options on that page may better fit your needs. If you do go this route, make sure you install the latest Killer Control Center and drivers as soon as Windows updates to 1803 or later, before other updates can take place. This is best done using our clean install guide (click here). To find out which version of Windows is currently installed, click Start, type winver, and press Enter. Refer to the "Version" number. When resetting  your PC or reinstalling Windows, this number may change as Windows updates. As soon as the build is 1803 or newer, install the latest Killer Control Center and drivers using the clean install guide. 
  8. Unfortunately, if none of the above resolves your issue, your next step will be to contact your machine or motherboard manufacturer for RMA or repair options. When a wireless network adapter's driver is updated, the firmware on the chip is flashed. If none of the above solved the problem, then this indicates that the adapter is no longer capable of accepting a flash, and will need to be replaced. Alternatively, the machine or motherboard manufacturer may have an unpublished BIOS update or chipset driver that can resolve the issue.

Which Killer Control Center Should I Install?

Users may notice that we often host more than one version of the Killer Control Center available for download from our website. This article will summarize the difference between the versions available, and hopefully give the user an idea of which installer they should download and use. 

A note on the Killer Network Manager - The Killer Network Manager is our deprecated performance suite. It does not contain current drivers. Users are free to use the Killer Network Manager if they like, but, as it is no longer in development, the first step in troubleshooting should be to uninstall the Killer Network Manager and install the Killer Control Center.
A note on finding your Windows version number - You will see Windows version numbers referenced in the following information. You can find your Windows version by clicking Start, then type winver and press Enter. You will see a box with information about your Windows install, including the Version, which is probably 1709 or 1803, as of June 5 2018. 
A note on device compatibility  -  The E2100, 2100, K1, M1, and Xeno Pro are legacy devices, and no longer receive driver updates. They are not supported with either of these packages.

What is this? This version is a major update. This is our most recent release, which has been tested primarily with, and optimized for Windows 10 version 1803 (April 2018 Update) and Windows 10 1809 (October 2018 Update). This package contains the latest drivers for all current Killer Networking devices, except for Wireless-N adapters. Also included is the latest Killer Control Center performance suite. A Killer Wireless-AC 1550 is not required - all supported Ethernet and Wireless-AC adapters will work with this version. The installer will first install device drivers, and then redirect to the Windows Store to install the Killer Control Center software. Please note that the version number listed here is the version of the installer. The version of the Killer Control Center that the Windows Store installs will be different. Machines with the Killer Wireless-AC 1550 and Killer E3000 will receive the Killer Control Center 2.0 user interface, while older adapters will receive the same optimizations to the service, but a slightly updated version of the original Killer Control Center user interface.

What's new from the previous release? Killer Control Center 2.0 for machines with a Killer Wireless-AC 1550 (including 1550i and 1550s) and E3000 adapters. Many backed/service updates for all devices.

Who should use this?  All currently supported Killer Networking adapter users who are using Windows 10 version 1803 (April 2018 Update), except those using Wireless-N adapters. Those using the Windows Insider Preview versions of Windows 10 are also encouraged to use this version, and provide us with any feedback, should you encounter any issues.

What if this will not install?  Click here for troubleshooting steps. If you are unable to install this version, please try installing version 1.5.1859 above after submitting your install log. It is important that you submit your install log before installing 1.5.1859, or the install log will reflect the results of that install instead of reflecting the results of your attempted install of the UWD version.

Special conditions for this release: This version will install on versions of Windows 10 that are older than version 1803 (April 2018 Update), but many things will not function well. We highly recommend installing this version only on Windows 10 1803, 1809, or newer.

 

 

Killer Control Center 64-bit - for Windows 7, 8.1 & older Windows 10 versions

What is this? This is our previous release, which was well tested and troublefree on all versions of Windows 10, including 1803 and 1809, except some edge cases with later hardware and 1803+.  This package contains the latest drivers for all Killer Networking devices, except for the Killer Wireless-AC 1550, as well as the Killer Control Center performance suite. The included driver for the Killer Wireless-AC 1550 is not known to be problematic, but our other package includes a more recent driver for this device. 

What's new from the previous release? A new, updated driver for the Killer Wireless-AC 1550. 

Who should use this?  All Killer Network adapter owners who are using Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, as well as those using Windows 10, who have not yet updated to Version 1803 (Windows Spring Update) or later, or who would prefer to not install the Killer Control Center through the Windows Store. Also, all Killer Wireless-N network adapter users, including Windows 1803 and 1809 or later, should use this install.

Special conditions for this release: Unlike the other package, this release uses a regular installer, and does not go through the Windows Store.

 

Errors When Installing

There have been many reports of issues with the Killer Control Center which can be resolved by performing a clean install of the Killer Control Center, as opposed to an update install, where the latest version is installed while an older version is in place. When troubleshooting, this is a good place to start. Here are the steps to perform a clean install of the Killer Control Center:

  1. Make sure you have the current installer handy to install. 
  2. Download the Killer Software Uninstaller Tool - https://www.killernetworking.com/support/KillerSoftwareUninstaller.exe
  3. Restart your machine by clicking Start > Power > Restart
  4. Run the Killer Software Uninstaller Tool. It is not necessary to scan, and the scan may not find anything. Regardless, click Remove Killer Software, and give it some time to run. When it is finished, it will say "RESTART REQUIRED."
  5. Restart your machine by clicking Start > Power > Restart
  6. Once your machine has booted back up, access  your temporary files folder and delete the contents
    1. Click Start
    2. Type %temp% and press Enter. Your temp folder should open.
    3. Delete all files in the temp folder. These are all temporary install files, and are safe to delete. If you receive a prompt saying that a file cannot be deleted, you can safely select Skip All
    4. Close the temp folder
  7. Run the installer that you downloaded for the Killer Control Center. Follow the prompts to complete the installation. 
  8. Restart your machine if the installer requested a restart.
  9. Test to see if the issue is resolved.

"Cannot Be Installed With" Errors

Users may encounter the following errors, potentially among others, when attempting to update or install the Killer Control Center:

  • Killer Performance Driver Suite cannot be installed with Killer Ethernet Performance Suite (or similar) and you have already tried our Clean Install Guide.
  • Any other install errors where the current suite cannot be installed with another of our products, after you have tried our Clean Install Guide.

Even if you are in the process of updating the Killer Control Center, the issue is that the installer is encountering parts of an old Killer Performance Suite, and is unable to uninstall them. 

This issue can be resolved by following these steps:

  1. Download the latest Killer Control Center and keep it somewhere handy - https://www.killernetworking.com/driver-downloads/kb/faq/22-update-killer-control-center
  2. Double-click the installer for the latest Killer Control Center. Let it fail. Do not restart your computer, even if asked. 
  3. Download Microsoft's tool for fixing problems that block programs from being installed or removed - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17588/fix-problems-that-block-programs-from-being-installed-or-removed

  4. Once you have both of those things downloaded, uninstall all Killer products from your Apps and Features menu, which you can access by right-clicking Start.

  5. You may encounter that same error and that is fine. When you do, skip that application, and uninstall any other applications from "Killer" including "Killer Drivers."

  6. Now run the tool from Microsoft. 

  7. For the first menu, you will simply click Next

  8. Then after a moment of "Detecting Problems", it will ask if you are having a problem installing or uninstalling a program. Even if you are trying to update or install the Killer Control Center, the actual problem is happening when the installer attempts to uninstall the old suite, so you will choose Uninstalling

  9. At the next prompt, the program will ask you to choose from a list of programs. Find the Killer-related program in the list. It may not be the same as the one in this screenshot, but choose whichever Killer suite the program finds, and then click the Next button.

  10. The tool will then proceed to erase the parts of the Killer suite that the installer was unable to remove from the registry. If the program is not listed, you have the option of choosing "Not Listed", and the tool may still find the pieces in the registry that need to be removed. However, it is hard to duplicate that particular scenario, so providing a screenshot is not possible, but it is fairly self-explanatory. 
  11. Once the tool has finished doing its work, you will want to restart your machine once more, and then install the latest Killer Control Center, which you downloaded previously.
  12. If  you are unable to fix the issue with this guide, try running through it again, but this time, choose Installing at step 7. This may help clear corrupted files that are not related to Killer components, but are still preventing the install.

Windows Update Slowed Or Broke Internet Connectivity

Update September 15 2018 - Windows 10 1809, which is currently being released in October 2018, seems to have caused many of these issues since its release. If you are unable to resolve this issue by following this knowledge base article, you may need to revert your operating system back to the Windows 10 1803 to restore functionality. While we do not yet have a guide for this, there are quite a few around the web, such as this excellent guide for rolling back to Windows 10 1803. 

Windows users will periodically run into situations where a Windows Update either slows or completely removes their ability to connect to the Internet. This is usually due to some component of the updated operating system not functioning well with older drivers, though sometimes Windows Updates have been known to just break things for no reason. In the past, Microsoft has even recalled some updates. Whatever the reason, if you know that your machine was working well before the Windows Update, the best way to restore functionality is often to remove that Windows Update. There are a few ways to do this.

First, you should check Device Manager and make sure it's not a simple error. To do that, right-click Start, click Device Manager, then double-click Network Adapters and look for your network adapter, be it a wireless adapter or an Ethernet adapter. If you find your network adapter, and it has a Code 10 error on it, then click here for a guide to manually install a driver for the device. If that's not the issue, or if that doesn't fix it, read on.

Try System Restore First

This is the fastest, easiest way to get your system back in working order, when it's available, and when it works. Luckily, if it doesn't work, it won't do anything at all. Here are the steps:

  1. Temporarily uninstall any third party antivirus application as these will almost universally prevent System Restore from restoring properly, resulting in an error. 
  2. Click Start
  3. Type system restore and click Create a Restore Point (don't worry, you're not doing that, that's just what comes up)
  4. Click the System Restore button.
  5. Check the "Recommended restore" option to make sure the date is very close to when the Windows Update happened, but still before it happened. If so, click Next.  If not, you can click "Choose a different restore point," but those will usually be earlier dates, if any. 
  6. There may be another confirmation prompt or two, depending on your build of Windows, but after that, System Restore should do its thing. This can take a while, so be patient. 

Uninstall The Windows Update

  1. If the System Restore doesn't work or isn't available, you will need to uninstall the Windows Update. This works surprisingly well and generally does not have many drawbacks, though making a back-up is definitely recommended. After you make your backup, you will want to set a System Restore point, as they are much faster and easier to use than restoring a backup, if necessary. Creating a System Restore point is similar to using one:
    1. Click Start
    2. Type system restore and click Create a Restore Point
    3. Check to make sure your system disk, probably (C:), has Protection "On". If not, click it Configure, and click Turn on System Protection, move the slider until it's using around 5% - 10%, then click Apply > OK. 
    4. Click Create
    5. Name it something you'll remember, like "Uninstalling Windows Updates." It will append the date, so you'll also have that information. Click Create and give it some time to finish.
    6. Once it is finished, close the "System Properties" window that opened when you searched for System Restore.
  2. Now to uninstall that update. This is surprisingly easy when you know where to look. Click Start, and type Windows Update.
  3. Click Windows Update Settings
  4. Click View Update History
  5. Click Uninstall Updates
  6. Click the Installed On column header to sort by the Installed On date until the newest updates are at the top. 
  7. This part is important. Even though you sorted by newest updates, you're probably still not looking at updates for Microsoft Windows. Instead, you're probably looking at updates for Microsoft Office, or Microsoft Visual C++, or possibly some other Microsoft product that you didn't even know you had. You can tell because, just under "Name", it will list the name of the application with no other information to its right. Scroll until you find Microsoft Windows, and you will have found the updates that we're looking for.
  8. You will want to uninstall any update that took place between now and when your machine last worked normally. To do that, click the update, and click Uninstall, which will hopefully appear beside "Organize" at the top of the columns. If the option to uninstall does not appear, this means that you cannot uninstall that update and keep your operating system intact. The same goes for updates that are not listed. 
  9. If you are unable to uninstall the update, you may have to resort to restoring a backup or, if that's not possible, resetting Windows. Click here for Microsoft's article on resetting Windows. Update Your Drivers As Soon As You Have Internet Access!

As soon as you are able to restore Internet access, be it with a System Restore, a backup restore, or uninstalling the Windows Update, make sure you update your drivers! This should prevent the issue from happening when Windows Update invariably installs the same update again in the future. Error 1923 Verify That You Have Sufficient Privileges and Error 1939

Some users may encounter the error Error 1923: Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services and/or Error 1939 when they attempt to update or install the Killer Control Center. This is caused by the installer not being able to remove the previous version of the service. This appears to be due to the moving of files by the Spring 2018 Windows Features Update. There were also some updates that were incorrectly pushed through Windows Update that have resulted in the Killer Control Center being left in this state. In order to resolve this issue, you will need to uninstall the old version of the Killer Control Center, remove the service, and then run the installer again. We have developed a new tool, which will quickly and easily remove all old versions of our performance suite, as well as all old versions of our service from your system. 

A few notes about the Killer Software Uninstaller Tool:

  • This is not the Killer Remover tool that you might find elsewhere on the web and in this knowledge base. This is a brand new tool that we have just recently developed due to this issue. The old Killer Remover tool is not capable of resolving this issue, as it only targets pieces of installs that were broken by Windows Feature Updates prior to the 2017 Fall Creator's Update. 
  • This tool does not remove device drivers, other than what would normally be removed when running the uninstaller for the suite that you have currently installed. This tool primarily removes the Killer Performance Suite, and its attachments to Windows Update. 

Here are the steps to correct the Error 1923, Error 1939, or any other issue where Windows Update has put your machine in a state where you cannot install the Killer Control Center:

  1. Click here to download the latest Killer Control Center installer from our website. 
  2. Click here to download the Killer Software Uninstaller Tool 
  3. Double-click the Killer Software Uninstaller Tool to run it.
  4. Click the Remove Killer Software button. This process may take some time.
  5. When the tool has finished removing everything, it will prompt you to restart your machine. Restart your machine by clicking Start > Power > Restart.
  6. Double-click the Killer Control Center installer and follow the prompts to install. 

Please note - some machines will stil show pending Windows Updates with "Killer" and/or "Rivet" in them. Now that you have removed the previous install, and installed the website version, these updates now refer to software that is not present on your system. They should either attempt to install, fail, and no longer show as "pending," or simply be removed from the list of pending updates. Installing the Killer 1550 with an M.2 to PCI-E Converter

The Killer Wireless-AC 1550 can be used in some M.2 to PCI-E converters, allowing desktop machines with open PCI-E slots to use the adapter, provided the following conditions are met.

  • The Killer Wireless-AC 1550 can only be used in PCI-E 1x or PCI-E 4x slots. It cannot be used in the longer PCI-E 8x or PCI-E 16x slots. Using an incorrect PCI-E slot can cause the 1550 to either not appear in Device Manager, or to appear in Device Manager with an error, or a bang symbol.

  • In our testing, we have noted that converters often do not produce working results when the converter is plugged into a northbridge slot. We advise that you use your converter in a southbridge slot. Although you will need to reference the technical specifications for your motherboard to know exactly which slot corresponds with which bridge, southbridge slots are generally those beneath the dedicate graphics slot on a desktop motherboard when the motherboard is installed in a tower case. 
  • For Bluetooth, a USB cable must be run between a USB 2.0 header on the motherboard and the USB header on the converter. If this is not connected, Bluetooth will not appear in Device Manager at all, and will not be usable. 
  • We cannot recommend any specific PCI-E converters. These are usually available from various vendors on Amazon, and most of them seem to work well, but they are typically unbranded, so buy at your own risk.
  • Please note that the Killer Wireless-AC 1550 is only compatible with Windows 10.

E2100, 2100, Xeno Pro, K1, and M1 (Legacy Devices)

The E2100, 2100, and Xeno Pro are legacy devices, and no longer receive updated device drivers. Please contact the manufacturer of your Killer 2100, Killer E2100, or Xeno Pro for the latest drivers. The same driver (either 32bit or 64bit) works for each product. It has been confirmed that the latest drivers for Killer 2100, Killer E2100, or Xeno Pro can be downloaded on VisionTek’s support page at: https://www.visiontek.com/support/download-drivers.html. If you are using Windows 10, and Windows does not automatically install drivers for the device, the Windows 8.1 drivers should work for your application.

There is no Windows 10 driver for the E2100, 2100 and Xeno Pro, and there will be no further driver development.

Support is no longer available for the Killer M1 and Killer K1.

Users may encounter bluescreen errors referencing "RfeCoSvc", "bwcW10x64", or "QCAmain10x64". 

If you are using the Killer Network Manager, this may be the cause of the errors. The Killer Control Center has replaced the Killer Network Manager, and the Killer Network Manager is no longer being developed. The Killer Control Center is fully compatible with the E2200, E2400, and the E2500, as well as all of our Wireless-N and Wireless-AC network adapters. 

If you are using the Killer Control Center, the error could be due to outdated drivers or an outdated version of the Killer Control Center.

Internet Problems With New Computers

This article only applies to brand new computers using Windows 10.

Some users may experience issues with brand new computers with Killer Network adapters and the Killer Control Center or Killer Network Manager preinstalled. 

These issues are often caused by Windows automatically updating to the latest version of the operating system without giving the user the chance to update any preinstalled software or device drivers. This results in software, which was likely up to date at the time the machine was boxed by the manufacturer, running on a version of the operating system on which it was never tested, and may not be able to operate on correctly.

If the user notices that, after Windows has updated, their Internet performance is severely degraded, or they see bluescreen errors that are attributed to our software or drivers, they should uninstall the Killer Control Center or Killer Network Manager, make sure Windows is fully updated, and then install the latest version of the Killer Control Center

Here is the step-by-step:

  1. If you are using Windows 10 and don't already know which build, find out which build of Windows that your machine is currently running. If your computer has completed the Windows 10 Spring 2018 update, you are running version 1803. Otherwise, or if you don't know, continue reading.
    1. Click Start
    2. Type winver and press Enter
    3. A box will appear with some information about Windows. There will be a 'Version" number. It will probably be either 1709 or 1803. 
  2. Download the correct installer for your version of Windows.
    1. Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 Version 1709 and below, or those using a Wireless-N device, should download this installer - https://www.killernetworking.com/driver-downloads/item/killer-control-center-x64
    2. Thos using Windows 10 Version 1803 and above should, and not using a Wireless-N adapter, should download this installer - https://www.killernetworking.com/driver-downloads/item/kcc-uwd
  3. Download the Killer Software Uninstaller Tool - https://www.killernetworking.com/support/KillerSoftwareUninstaller.exe
  4. Restart your machine by clicking Start > Power > Restart
  5. Run the Killer Software Uninstaller Tool. It is not necessary to scan, and the scan may not find anything. Regardless, click Remove Killer Software, and give it some time to run. When it is finished, it will say "RESTART REQUIRED."
  6. Restart your machine by clicking Start > Power > Restart

Fall Creator's Update Breaks Network Adapter

Some users have experienced issues with their network adapters directly after the Windows 10 Fall Creator's Update. The errors vary, but most point to a hardware failure of some kind. We have received reports of "Network Cable Unplugged" and "Device Cannot Start," even though the adapters were working normally before the update. Unfortunately, in some cases, the only solution seems to be to uninstall and reinstall the Windows 10 Fall Creator's Update. However, one thing you can try is uninstalling all drivers for the device from the Windows driver store, then restarting the machine, and installing the latest drivers. Here are the steps: 

  1. Make sure you have the latest Killer Control Center installer handy on the machine (you may need to use a USB thumb drive or some other medium if you can't access the Internet with the machine). 
  2. Right-click Start, click Apps and Features, find all entries with "Killer" in the title, and uninstall them. This includes "Killer Drivers" or "Killer Suite" or any variations. You can hold off on restarting for now if an uninstaller says to do so.
    1. If you encounter any issues with uninstalling, such as the uninstaller hanging (give it at least ten minutes), or giving an error message, cancel the uninstallation, then right-click the taskbar and click Task Manager.
    2. Make sure the Processes tab is selected.
    3. Click Name at the top of the "Name" column to sort by name.
    4. Scroll down and find any "Killer" process under "Apps" and "Background Processes", click it, and click the End Task button.
    5. Click the Services tab. 
    6. Click Name to sort by name.
    7. Scroll down and find the "Killer Network Service". Right-click it and click Stop. 
    8. Close the Task Manager window and return to the Apps and Features menu, and continue uninstalling all "Killer Drivers" or "Killer Suite" entries.
  3. Close Apps and Features and right-click Start and click Device Manager
  4. Find the Ethernet adapter under the Network Adapters heading, right click it, and click Uninstall Device. If you cannot find it, you may need to click View > Show hidden devices at the top of Device Manager. It may also be listed somewhere other than under Network Adapters.
  5. Check the box for Delete the driver software for this device if it is present.
  6. Click Uninstall.
  7. Click the light blue Scan for hardware changes icon at the top of Device Manager. The adapter will probably reappear, and may or may not still show a Code 10, but I would suggest continuing with this guide either way.
  8. Repeat steps 4-7 until you no longer have the option to Delete the driver software for this device. Note that you could keep doing this indefinitely, as Windows will always install a default driver, but once you can no longer Delete the driver software for this device, you have accomplished the goal of clearing out all of the drivers that we were trying to clear out, and so you're done by that point.
  9. Restart the computer by clicking Start > Power > Restart. Do not rely on the machine's power button as many modern computers have that button set to sleep, not power off. 
  10. Once the machine has restarted, run the installer for the latest Killer Control Center. If everything doesn't look perfect, restart the machine after the installation, even if the installer did not say to do so. 

If that doesn't solve the issue, you can try uninstalling the Fall Creator's Update. Here are the steps to do that:

  1. Click ​Start
  2. Type ​Windows Update ​and click ​Windows Update Settings.
  3. Click ​Recovery​ on the left. 
  4. Under "Go back to the previous version of Windows 10" click ​the ​Get Started​ button, and follow the prompts from there to revert to the previous version of Windows 10.

Once you have reverted to the previous version of Windows 10, make sure you hae updated to the latest version of your network adapter drivers. You can download the latest Killer Control Center, with the latest drivers, from here - https://www.killernetworking.com/killersupport/driver-downloads

Windows will invariably reinstall the update at some point. You can either wait for it to update on its own, or you can search Windows Update, then click Check for Updates, and it will likely download and install the Fall Creator's Update again, hopefully without the same issue, as you will now have the latest drivers for your network adapter.

Slow Network Speeds

Slow Network Speeds

If you are experiencing slow Internet or network speeds, you can follow this troubleshooting guide to address and correct the most common problems. 

If you haven't already, please try installing the latest Killer Control Center from our website, and only from our website. It includes many fixes and improvements that are not be included in other packages. If you are still using the Killer Network Manager, you'll want to download the Killer Control Center, and then manually uninstall the Killer Network Manager, as well as the "Killer Drivers" entry in your programs list. You can find the latest Killer Control Center here: https://www.killernetworking.com/killersupport/driver-downloads.

Once you have successfully updated your drivers, you will want to restart your computer by clicking Start > Power > Restart. It is important to note that closing the lid or pressing the power button on many modern computers does not shut them down, but instead activates sleep mode. You must restart them by clicking Start > Power > Restart for them to restart.

If updating the drivers does not solve the issue, try resetting your networking equipment in this specific order, even if you have reset your some or all of your equipment previously. This order is proven to help your devices sync up properly, and will help to get a clean slate with further troubleshooting. Doing this can help even if only one device is experiencing problems. 

  1. Shut down your computer.
  2. Locate your modem and note the lights on your modem when it is normal and ready. There may be a "Ready" light.
  3. Unplug your modem, router, and any switches or hubs, between your computer and the modem, as well as any wireless boosters or access points, and leave them all unplugged for now.
  4. Plug in your modem.
  5. Wait until your modem's lights show normal operation again.
  6. Plug in your router, if you have one, and give it about five minutes to boot.
  7. Plug in anything else between your computer and the modem
  8. Power on your computer.
  9. Once your computer is booted and connected to the Internet, you will want to reset its network stack:
    1. In the search box on the taskbar, type Command prompt, right-click Command prompt, and then select Run as administrator > Yes.
    2. At the command prompt, run the following commands in the listed order, and then check to see if that fixes your connection problem:
      • Type ipconfig /release and press Enter.
      • Type ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter.
      • Type ipconfig /renew and press Enter.
      • Type netsh int ip reset and press Enter.
      • Type netsh winsock reset and press Enter.
  10. Now reboot your machine once more and test to see if the issue is resolved.

If not, the next step is to make sure that your Windows installation is completely up to date. Microsoft has been updating Windows more often than with any previous release, so it's important to keep things up to date. To do this, simply search Windows Updates, hit Enter, and then click Check for Updates. If your machine finds updates, check again once it finishes installing. Once your machine finds no updates, restart again, and then check for updates once more. Once your machine finds no updates upon a fresh reboot, your Windows installation should be fully up to date.

If you have performed the above, and you are still experiencing issues with slow network speeds, there are some other things to try:

  • Set a benchmark. Place the device in one place, if dealing with Wi-Fi, and run a test using one speed test. Turn off all other network usage while troubleshooting. Speedtest.net and Testmy.net are both good bandwidth tests. Run three tests in short succession and record an average as your starting point. Test after each change to see if there has been improvement. Record what you changed, and what the speeds the change produced. If the change seems dramatic, restart the machine and test again to be sure. 
  • Make sure your BIOS is up to date from your machine or mainboard manufacturer's support page.
  • Make sure your chipset drivers are up to date from your machine or mainboard manufacturer's support page.
  • Make sure all of the other drivers are up to date from your machine or mainboard manufacturer's support page. You can safely download and install all available driver packages. If the driver does not apply, it will either not install, or will not be used. If the only options in a driver installer package are "Repair" or "Uninstall", choosing "Repair" will update the driver, if there is a newer driver available.
  • Update the firmware on your router if you own the router.
  • Update the firmware on your modem if you own the modem, but only if your ISP accepts the firmware. Your ISP's support team can help you with this. Some ISPs also have this information listed somewhere, but they may need to do something on their end if you update the firmware, in order to re-authorize your modem. 
  • Have your ISP update the firmware on your modem or router if they own your modem or router.
  • If you are using Wi-Fi, minimize the number of solid objects between the access point's antenna and the device suffering from low speeds, using line-of-sight. Moving a device or antenna even an inch to one side could bypass multiple solid objects, making an enormous difference. 
  • If you are using Wi-Fi, use the Killer Control Center's Wi-Fi analyzer to make changes to your router's settings. 
    • 5 GHz routers should be set to channels 36-48, and/or 149-165 that are as far away from other channels as possible.
    • 2.4 GHz routers should be set to channels 1, 6, or 11, depending on which channels have the least powerful conflicting radios present.
    • Sideband, or side channel should be set to 20 MHz if there are many other Wi-Fi access points in your area, especially if you are forced to share a channel. Higher side channels are less powerful, but provide a wider band, allowing the signal to get around solid objects better, theoretically improving performance in situations where there are no interference concerns, but the Wi-Fi signal needs to "get around" solid objects. Many, however, report that, in real life testing, 20 MHz still provides the better signal, so your mileage may vary. 
  • If you are using Wi-Fi and your router has both a 5 GHz radio and a 2.4 GHz radio, name them something different. Although it might seem simpler to name them the same thing, many routers do not handle this very well, and you can see performance issues by having them named the same thing. Many people opt to simply add "5" to the end of the 5 GHz radio. 
  • If you are using Wi-Fi extenders, name each of your extenders something different, so that you know which access point you are connected to. Wi-Fi extenders have limited radio capacity, and will, always provide at least slightly slower speeds than connecting directly to the router, as they have to use the same radio to receive and transmit, at the same time. 
  • If it seems like other machines using the same access point are having no issues, try to verify this. Borrow their machine and run a speed test. Ask for permission first, of course. If you are experiencing issues on a public access point, you might just find that the public access point is just terrible, and that no one else is having a problem because you're the only one playing latency-intensive first person shooters. 
  • If you are using a Wireless-N router in a crowded Wi-Fi environment, you are very likely to encounter drops and speed issues no matter what settings you change. Unfortunately, the 2.4 GHz spectrum is very limited on how many channels are available, and conflicts arise quickly. Updating to a Wireless-AC router may be required to increase your speeds and reduce wireless drops. 
  • If you are using an antivirus or firewall application, try completely uninstalling it for testing purposes. Unfortunately, simply disabling these programs do not work for troubleshooting purposes, as they often continue to manipulate network traffic. They must be fully uninstalled. If you notice that your speeds increase dramatically with the antivirus or firewall application uninstalled, try installing a freshly downloaded version from their website. If that doesn't help, then the issue may be one with the antivirus application itself. In that case, you will want to contact the support team for the antivirus application.

Error 2753: The File 'xtendsoftapservice.exe' is Not Marked for Installation

This guide also fixes the error "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable..."

Some users may encounter this, or a similar error, when updating their drivers or Killer Control Center, or when uninstalling the Killer Control Center.

Even if you are in the process of updating the Killer Control Center, the issue is that the installer is unable to find this file in order to uninstall it, which is a necssary step for installing the latest suite.

The problem is that the file is either not present, or is not correctly flagged in the registry. This is a bug that was introduced in a few versions of the suite when it was present on your machine during a major Windows feature update, or an upgrade to Windows 10 from another version.

Note that this guide can also be used to uninstall some older versions of the application, which have become bugged due to Windows Feature Updates, and may or may not appear in the Apps and Features menu. The process is exactly the same. 

This issue can be resolved by following these steps:

  1. Download the latest Killer Control Center and keep it somewhere handy, to install when you're finished uninstalling the old suite - http://www.killernetworking.com/driver-downloads/item/killer-control-center-x64
  2. Download Microsoft's tool for fixing problems that block programs from being installed or removed - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17588/fix-problems-that-block-programs-from-being-installed-or-removed

  3. Once you have both of those things downloaded, uninstall all Killer products from your Apps and Features menu, which you can access by right-clicking Start.

  4. You may encounter that same error - Error 2753. The File 'xtendsoftapservice.exe' is Not Marked for Installation - and that is fine. When you do, skip that application, and uninstall any other applications from "Killer" including "Killer Drivers."

  5. Now run the tool from Microsoft. 

  6. For the first menu, you will simply click Next

  7. Then after a moment of "Detecting Problems", it will ask if you are having a problem installing or uninstalling a program. Even if you are trying to update or install the Killer Control Center, the actual problem is happening when the installer attempts to uninstall the old suite, so you will choose Uninstalling

  8. At the next prompt, the program will ask you to choose from a list of programs. Find the Killer-related program in the list. It may not be the same as the one in this screenshot, but choose whichever Killer suite the program finds, and then click the Next button.

  9. The tool will then proceed to erase the parts of the Killer suite that the installer was unable to remove from the registry. If the program is not listed, you have the option of choosing "Not Listed", and the tool may still find the pieces in the registry that need to be removed. However, it is hard to duplicate that particular scenario, so providing a screenshot is not possible, but it is fairly self-explanatory. 
  10. Once the tool has finished doing its work, you will want to restart your machine once more, and then install the latest Killer Control Center, which you downloaded previously.

Ad-Hoc and Hotspot Functionality with Killer Adapters in Windows 10

You may wish to create an Ad-Hoc or Hotspot network with your Killer Adapter on your Windows 10 machine.

With Windows 10, all Ad-Hoc and Hotspot functionality has been officially moved away from the drivers, and into the operating system itself.

If you would like to create a Hotspot or Ad-Hoc network with Windows 10, you simply need to click Start, type Hotspot, and press Enter. All of the relevant settings for your Hotspot network will be on that page.

With Windows 10, this is the current official limit of Hotspot or Ad-Hoc functionality.

The Windows 10 version of our driver does not support the "Hosted Network" feature because Microsoft's own WDI driver does not have support for this. Microsoft is having all wireless vendors move to the WDI model, thus this feature will not work on Windows 10 drivers until after (and if) Microsoft expands support for SoftAP/Wi-Fi Direct.

In the meantime, if you need this feature back for certain older applications that made use of their own Hotspot or Ad-Hoc features, you can load the Windows 8.1 drivers via Device Manager from our INF download. We have verified that this works, and have had confirmation from other users as well.

However, we cannot guarantee that Windows Update will not automatically update these drivers, or that they will work flawlessly with Windows 10, as they are, after all, Windows 8.1 drivers. Use Windows 8.1 drivers in Windows 10 at your own risk.

Unfortunately, as the Killer Wireless-AC 1550 only has Windows 10 drivers, this workaround will not work for the 1550.

Installing Bluetooth Drivers From Device Manager

In some cases, when there is no driver for your Bluetooth device, the Device Manager may mis-identify the Bluetooth device, or it may not identify it at all. In this case, you will need to install the Bluetooth driver from the Device Manager by following these steps:

  1. Run the installer but don't bother rebooting
  2. Verify that it created a folder called "C:\Program Files (x86)\Bluetooth Suite"
  3. In Device Manager, double-click the Bluetooth device, however it is currently named
  4. Under the Driver tab, click Update Driver
  5. Click Browse My Computer For Driver Software
  6. Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
  7. Click Have Disk
  8. Browse to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Bluetooth Suite\driver"
  9. There should be only one option - atheros_bth.inf - click it and click Open
  10. Click Okay
  11. Select Qualcomm Atheros QCA61x4 Bluetooth 4.1 and click Next
  12. Click Yes on the warning popup
  13. Reboot after it finishes the install
  14. After the reboot, check Device Manager to verify that your Bluetooth device is now named Qualcomm Atheros QCA61x4 Bluetooth 4.1 and you should be good to go!

Network Column in Windows Task Manager Not Working

For our software to display bandwidth correctly, Windows NDU (Windows Network Data Usage Monitoring Driver) ends up getting stopped/disabled. This is because both services work by examining packets, and both doing so at the same time can cause conflicts.

If you force NDU to run while Killer Control Center or Killer Network Manager is installed, those two programs may not display bandwidth correctly.

If you would like to re-activate the Windows NDU to test for yourself, open a Command Prompt and enter the following:

sc config ndu start=auto

After you enter that command, reboot your Computer.

NDU should now be set to start automatically and the Task Manager Processes tab should show traffic in the Network column, but the Killer Control Center or Killer Network Manager might not work properly.

To disable it, enter the following into a Command Prompt:

sc config ndu start=disabled

After you enter that command, reboot your Computer.

Memory Leaks

 

Memory Leaks

Some users have reported memory leaks with some versions of our performance suite. The current version of the Killer Control Center has no known instance of memory leaks. Unfortunately, when a computer is assembled, the software that is installed on the computer will not necessarily be up to date when the user unboxes the machine. This means that the user will need to update the software. Various computer manufacturers test and provide various versions of our software on their own support pages at their discretion, so the version of our software that you might find elsewhere on the web may not be the most up to date. I

If you are experiencing memory leaks, we highly suggest clean installing the latest Killer Control Center by following these steps:

  1. If you are using Windows 10 and don't already know which build, find out which build of Windows that your machine is currently running. If your computer has completed the Windows 10 Spring 2018 update, you are running version 1803. Otherwise, or if you don't know, continue reading.
    1. Click Start
    2. Type winver and press Enter
    3. A box will appear with some information about Windows. There will be a 'Version" number. It will probably be either 1709 or 1803. 
  2. Download the correct installer for your version of Windows.
    1. Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 Version 1709 and below, or those using a Wireless-N device, should download this installer - https://www.killernetworking.com/driver-downloads/item/killer-control-center-x64
    2. Thos using Windows 10 Version 1803 and above should, and not using a Wireless-N adapter, should download this installer - https://www.killernetworking.com/driver-downloads/item/kcc-uwd
  3. Download the Killer Software Uninstaller Tool - https://www.killernetworking.com/support/KillerSoftwareUninstaller.exe
  4. Restart your machine by clicking Start > Power > Restart
  5. Run the Killer Software Uninstaller Tool. It is not necessary to scan, and the scan may not find anything. Regardless, click Remove Killer Software, and give it some time to run. When it is finished, it will say "RESTART REQUIRED."
  6. Restart your machine by clicking Start > Power > Restart
  7. Once your machine has booted back up, access  your temporary files folder and delete the contents
    1. Click Start
    2. Type %temp% and press Enter. Your temp folder should open.
    3. Delete all files in the temp folder. These are all temporary install files, and are safe to delete. If you receive a prompt saying that a file cannot be deleted, you can safely select Skip All
    4. Close the temp folder
  8. Run the installer that you downloaded for the Killer Control Center. Follow the prompts to complete the installation. 
  9. Restart your machine if the installer requested a restart.
  10. Test to see if the issue is resolved.

Wi-Fi Channels 12 and 13

Some users have reported problems seeing Wi-Fi access points that are using channels 12 or 13. This is a driver issue that will be corrected in later versions. In the meantime, there is a fairly simple registry tweak, which you can perform, that will enable your machine to see these channels. Note that this method has only been tested in Windows 10. If you have success using this method in Windows 7 or 8.1, please reach out to us at the contact information below and let us know!

  1. Click Start
  2. Type regedit and press Enter
  3. Copy the following, and paste it into the bar beneath File, Edit, View, Favorite, Help: 

    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e972-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
     
  4. Then press Enter. It should jump to a point in the registry that looks like the below picture.

  5. Each numbered folder within corresponds with a device on your machine. Unfortunately, from here, it's complete guesswork as to which folder equals which device. Fortunately, it's pretty obvious as you click on each folder. For instance, 0006 is my Killer 1525, as you can see in screenshot. If in doubt, look for the "DriverDesc" entry. They're in alphabetical order. But, again, it should be pretty obvious. If you see it talking about Bluetooth, it's the wrong one. Once you find it, you know where the registry portion for your Killer adapter is hiding. 
  6. On the right pane of the registry editor, find the entry marked "AddNewChannelfor11d". This is our holy grail of channels 12 and 13. It is currently set to a value of 0. Double-click it. Change the value to 1, and click the OK button.
  7. Click File then Exit
  8. You have now activated the adapter's ability to see channels 12 and 13. 

Killer xTend Compatibility

Killer xTend is only available on specifically made mainboards that have three or more Killer network adapters integrated. The feature requires Windows 10 64-bit. 

Please note that Killer xTend and Killer Wireless xTend are two different features. Killer Wireless xTend is available with any machine using a current version of the Killer Control Center and the Killer Wireless-AC 1550.

Note: This guide is written for Windows 10, but will also work for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 with only minor variation. You alone are responsible for any issues caused by manipulating your Device Manager.

Before you begin this process, you need to know where the driver installer stores its temporary files. Recent Killer installers store all of their temporary files in the TEMP folder, which can be accessed by pressing Win Key + R to bring up the Run command, then type %TEMP% and press Enter. Other driver packages may use other locations, but you will need to know this information to clear these files, or Windows may attempt to install old drivers from this location. 

  1. Make sure you have the latest driver installer for the driver you will be installing. Killer Drivers can be found here - http://www.killernetworking.com/driver-downloads. The Killer Control Center includes the latest performance suite, as well as the latest drivers for current Ethernet and Wi-Fi adapters. Bluetooth drivers are separate.   2. Right-click Start and click Apps and Features and uninstall any applications associated with the drivers that you will be reinstalling. For Killer Drivers, you can use our uninstaller tool, found here - https://www.killernetworking.com/support/KillerSoftwareUninstaller.exe
  3. Restart your machine using Start > Power > Restart. Do not use your machine's power button. This button is often mapped to the "sleep" function, and does not serve the same purpose. Restarting your machine clears any running processes that may be tied to files in the temporary folders.
  4. Delete all temporary installation files for the device driver. For Killer Drivers, you can accomplish this by deleting the entire contents of the TEMP folder. Some elements may not be removable, but they are not likely to be related to the Killer application or drivers. 
  5. Right-click Start and click Device Manager.
  6. Click View and click Show hidden devices (Note: this will reveal many devices that are no longer attached to your machine, as well as devices that should not be touched. If in doubt, leave it alone. You alone are responsible for any issues caused by manipulating drivers in your Device Manager.)
  7. Find the device whose driver you are uninstalling or reinstalling. 
  8. Right-click the device and click Uninstall.
  9. Check the box for Remove the driver software for this device, if the option exists.
  10. Click the Uninstall button.
  11. Uninstall any duplicates of this device, even if they are grayed out. 
  12. Once the Device Manager has completed uninstalling the drivers, click the light-blue Scan for hardware changes icon at the top of Device Manager. The device will probably reappear. If there were multiples, only one should reappear.
  13. Repeat steps 8 thru 12 until you no longer see the option to Remove the driver software for this device. At this point, you have removed all installed drivers from the driver store. If Windows has a default driver, it will still reinstall that driver, but you can generally leave that driver in place as it ships with Windows.
  14. Restart your machine once more.
  15. Run the installer for the latest drivers.

Using The Microsoft Tool For Fixing Killer Control Center Install Issues

Users may encounter the following errors, potentially among others, when attempting to update or install the Killer Control Center:

  • Killer Performance Driver Suite cannot be installed with Killer Ethernet Performance Suite (or similar)
  • Error 1714 - the older version cannot be removed. Contact your technical support.
  • The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable...
  • Error 2753 - The File 'xtendsoftapservice.exe' is Not Marked for Installation
  • The installer appears to work, then the progress bar goes backward, and the installer fails
  • The installer prompts for a .MSI file in a strange directory

Even if you are in the process of updating the Killer Control Center, the issue is that the installer is encountering parts of an old Killer Performance Suite, and is unable to uninstall them. 

This issue can be resolved by following these steps:

  1. Download the latest Killer Control Center and keep it somewhere handy, to install when you're finished uninstalling the old suite - https://www.killernetworking.com/driver-downloads/kb/faq/22-update-killer-control-center
  2. Doule-click the installer for the latest Killer Control Center. Let it fail. Do not restart your computer, even if asked. 
  3. Download Microsoft's tool for fixing problems that block programs from being installed or removed - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17588/fix-problems-that-block-programs-from-being-installed-or-removed

  4. Once you have both of those things downloaded, uninstall all Killer products from your Apps and Features menu, which you can access by right-clicking Start.

  5. You may encounter that same error - Error 2753. The File 'xtendsoftapservice.exe' is Not Marked for Installation - and that is fine. When you do, skip that application, and uninstall any other applications from "Killer" including "Killer Drivers."

  6. Now run the tool from Microsoft. 

  7. For the first menu, you will simply click Next

  8. Then after a moment of "Detecting Problems", it will ask if you are having a problem installing or uninstalling a program. Even if you are trying to update or install the Killer Control Center, the actual problem is happening when the installer attempts to uninstall the old suite, so you will choose Uninstalling

  9. At the next prompt, the program will ask you to choose from a list of programs. Find the Killer-related program in the list. It may not be the same as the one in this screenshot, but choose whichever Killer suite the program finds, and then click the Next button.

  10. The tool will then proceed to erase the parts of the Killer suite that the installer was unable to remove from the registry. If the program is not listed, you have the option of choosing "Not Listed", and the tool may still find the pieces in the registry that need to be removed. However, it is hard to duplicate that particular scenario, so providing a screenshot is not possible, but it is fairly self-explanatory. 
  11. Once the tool has finished doing its work, you will want to restart your machine once more, and then install the latest Killer Control Center, which you downloaded previously.
  12. If  you are unable to fix the issue with this guide, try running through it again, but this time, choose Installing at step 7. This may help clear corrupted files that are not related to Killer components, but are still preventing the install.

KCC Version Does Not Match Installer Version Number

 

Installer (UWD) Version Does Not Match KCC Version

Some users have expressed confusion in that the current version of the installer does not install a version of the Killer Control Center by that same number. The Killer Software Package and the UWD Killer Control Center will not share a version number. This is due to the Killer Software Package installing multiple items in order for the latest Killer Control Center to work correctly. The Killer Software Package:

  1. Installs the latest device drivers for whatever Killer devices you have installed in your machine.
  2. Installs the current Killer Network Service, which is what does all of the work reducing latency and prioritizing applications.
  3. Installs the extension drivers needed for Windows 10 to be able to download and run the current version of the Killer Control Center.
  4. Forwards you to the Windows Store to install the Killer Control Center.

As the drivers, the network service, and the Killer Control Center will all be different versions, the Killer Software Package must also have its own version number.

To see if you have the current version of the Killer Software Package installed, right-click Start, then click Apps and Features. In that menu, scroll until you find Killer Performance Driver Suite UWD, then click it to expand. That version, circled in the image below, should match what is available from our website if you are using the latest version, regardless of which networking adapter your machine uses.
